LOW-LEVEL NEAR-INFRARED & RED LIGHT THERAPY

Near-Infrared (NIR) light therapy (600-900nm wavelength) and its therapeutic properties were discovered rather accidentally but date back to experiments in the 1960s. In one experiment (1971), photodynamic therapy was delivered to tumor cells in rodents, and by chance the intensity of the laser was reduced mistakenly. In this study, the results observed successfully promoted superficial wound healing in the treated animals. The findings revealed the therapeutic effects of low-intensity laser therapy and thus the field of research on low-level light therapy and NIR therapy came to be.

The absorption of light by the tissue and its ability to deposit energy is key to the use of lights’ therapeutic applications. This is mainly dependent on the wavelength. Studies show that the ‘optical window’ of light absorption by the tissue lies between 600 and 1350 nm for effective tissue penetration of light without the light rays scattering (and thus not taking therapeutic effect).

NIR rays are further from the visible spectrum, compared to red light, and thus has a lower scattering capacity. Red and NIR light can penetrate the deep dermal tissue injury sites. Light based therapy, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) using consumer grade red and near infrared light, has been especially studied in its application in promoting dermal wound healing. This study (2016) concludes there are numerous applications for promising biophysical healing.

Activate your Body and Mind with Low-Level NIR & Red Light Therapy

Studies on Low-Level NIR & Red Light Therapy show uses for:

Sleep Quality and Disorders

Generally speaking – light, activity and food intake sends the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) – the one responsible for the master circadian clock in human beings – signals which are relevant for the regulation of the circadian rhythm.

The body, for example, requires Melatonin (a hormone that regulates the circadian rhythm and promotes sleep). This is secreted by the pineal gland and regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Melatonin secretion increases at night and decreases during the day. Research states that after light stimulation during the day, the SCN acts on the pineal gland to suppress the secretion of melatonin, thus reducing drowsiness.

Researchers have explored different lights at different wavelengths (mainly distributed in the range of the red spectrum, 620-760nm, and NIR spectrum, 780-825nm, and the range of wavelengths (aforementioned) in its vital role in the light therapies’ mechanism.

In one study (2012), red light therapy was used for 30 minutes a day, every night for 14 days for the “sleep quality and endurance performance of Chinese female basketball players”. Results showed that, “The 14-day whole-body irradiation with red-light treatment improved the sleep, serum melatonin level, and endurance performance of the elite female basketball players [with a 95 per cent confidence interval].” In this case, red light body irradiation improved the quality of sleep of elite basketball female players. The study presents red light therapy as a non-invasive therapy to prevent sleep disorders after training. For the original article source, see here.

Skin Problems

Near-Infrared & Red Light Health Benefits is a widely explored type of therapy for skin conditions and go as far back to Egyptian, Indian and Chinese treatments in the use of light to aid healthier skin.

In the modern day, studies on phototherapy with LEDs have seen to medical applications for mild-to-moderate acne. The study (2018) observed results that, “The treatment modality displays an excellent safety profile and can be effectively used for the treatment of acne vulgaris, wound healing applications following surgical aesthetic and resurfacing procedures, actinic keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma in situ, and basal cell carcinoma. LED phototherapy is also an effective means for rejuvenating aged skin when used alone or together with a photosensitizer, such as 5-ALA, as well as post-procedural erythema.”

It’s also been previously demonstrated that the combination of blue and red light has been observed to have greater positive effects on acne. This is “probably by combining antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, [and] is an effective means of treating acne vulgaris of mild to moderate severity, with no significant short-term adverse effects.”

As one practictioner notes; our bodies create lactic acids and free fatty acids, as well as excess sodium and uric acid through the food we consume and thus must process this through our bodies. Studies have found those with skin problems have often benefited from types of light therapy to cleanse the liver and kidneys, as opposed to overworking the skin through the body processing toxins through the dermis.

Wound Healing

NASA-funded research by Dr. Harry Whelan, professor of paediatric neurology and director of hyperbaric medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, go as far back as 2000. This research states findings of the benefits of Infrared light therapy. These especially showed remarkable results in the use of light-emitting diodes to promote healing. In this instance, for the healing of painful mouth ulcers and to prevent further sores in the patient’s mouth. Doctors also reported 50 per cent faster healing of lacerations when exposed to LED light therapy. In this instance, injuries treated with the LEDs healed in seven days, whilst untreated injuries took 14 days.

“So far, what we’ve seen in patients and what we’ve seen in laboratory cell cultures, all point to one conclusion,” said Dr. Harry Whelan, professor of paediatric neurology and director of hyperbaric medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. “The near-infrared light emitted by these LEDs seems to be perfect for increasing energy inside cells. This means whether you’re on Earth in a hospital, working in a submarine under the sea or on your way to Mars inside a spaceship, the LEDs boost energy to the cells and accelerate healing.”

Mental Health

Research into NIR and low-level photobiomodulation therapy has extended to its role in mitochondrial dysfunction in mitigating the impact of neurodegenerative process. In 2014, studies in mice brains (Moro et al., 2014) explored the popularisation of NIR as a neuroprotective aid for those with Parkinson’s disease. One of the main challenges addressed in the paper, was the prolonged degenerative process that, in this case, Parkinson’s disease takes course over years and for prolonged and sustained delivery of NIR stimulation over an extended period (Foo et al., 2020). Results found that only 20-30 per cent of SNpc dopaminergic neurons (the neuroprotective modality for Parkinson’s disease) from the NIR delivery to the target region (in this case the mid-brain of the mice) remained immediately at the time of diagnosis. The findings, for which PBM augments mitochondrial function, at the time of the study, remained unclear and limited for PBM as an instrument for those with Parkinson’s’ disease.

However, the popularisation and research of NIR and light therapy as an aid for neurodegenerative diseases in more recent medical research is highlighted here. According to research reported in the February 2017 JAMA Neurology Journal, Near-infrared light (NIR) and low-level laser or LED continues to be used in treating neurodegenerative disorders in “repair-oriented therapy to stabilise defective neurons”. More commonly, light therapy and Parkinson’s’ disease studies such as those mentioned, convey light therapy as “an attractive therapeutic approach” for sleep disorders and depression.

Joint Pain and Inflammation

A primary use of LLLT [Low-Level Laser Therapy] in the physical rehabilitation setting is for soft tissue and bone healing that originally started from seeing positive healing effects for wounds when lasers were first started to be used clinically; more recently, it has been used for osteoarthritis (OA). Photobiomodulation has been shown to activate NF-kB in cells, and in activated inflammatory cells, inflammation markers decreased. Studies on the effects of photobiomodulation has shown an overall reduction in inflammation and pain reduction. This is particular to those with joint disorders and injuries (Hamblin, 2017). For more information, see here.

Chronic Non-Malignant Pain

In Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) studies, the treatment of chronic non-malignant pain has seen successful observation. In one study, the analysis of the effect of low-power helium-neon laser (1 mw, 632.5 nm, 20 Hz) was observed in the irradiation treatment of skin overlying painful joints for 4-8 minutes according to predetermined protocol. This was repeated 3 times a week for 10 weeks. The results observed subjects in the experimental treatment group exhibited a highly significant reduction in pain intensity. In another study, 50 subjects with low back pain of at least 6 months were instructed to use a FIR pad placed in their chairs in contact with the affected area while on the job over a 4 week period for at least 45 minutes a day during the work week. The results observed that use of site-specific FIR therapy over a four-week period in the workplace was associated with both physical and mental improvements for general well-being and significant clinical improvements in pain previously associated with low back pain.

Feeling of Well-Being

Endorphin levels are commonly known to help with our feeling of well-being. This study states: “The fact that low dose (1 J/cm2) IR laser (820nm) and high dose (5 J/cm2) red laser (670 nm) resulted in a cumulative pre-treatment increase in ACTH and high dose (5 J/cm2) IR laser resulted in increases in plasma B-endorphin levels over the duration of the study suggests that localized, peripheral phototherapy of trigger points an induced cumulative activation of central hormonal/opioid pathways capable of regulating immune function.” The studyconfirms that positive responses to Low-Level Light Therapy are dose, power output and wavelength-dependent.

“LLLT resulted in potentiation of overall levels of B-endorphin and ACTH, it is suggested that the therapeutic window of doses for LLLT treatment of trigger points could be extended to include 5 J/cm2.” For the full study, see here.

FAQ

How long should I use the device for?

It depends completely upon the area being treated and the distance of treatment.

In general, all that is needed is usually 10-20 minutes.

Should I wear eye protection?

Eye protection is supplied with our products. We don’t recommend looking directly at the LEDs because it can sometimes be uncomfortable. With that said, your eyes typically become accustomed to the light and it is then OK to open your eyes, as long as you aren’t feeling discomfort.

Why aren’t the infrared LEDs working?

I can’t see them. Near infrared (NIR) light is actually not visible to the naked human eye.

It is outside of the visual spectrum, and as a result, it cannot be seen. However, there is a very slight glow that comes from the LEDs, especially in dark conditions, so if you are concerned the NIR LEDs are really not working, you can test them that way.

Does red light therapy interfere with the medications?

Red and near infrared light therapy has been proven in thousands of clinical studies and peer reviewed clinical trials to be not only safe but also effective. However, if you use medications such as Tetracycline, Digoxin,Retin A, and/or other photo sensitizing drugs, we recommend consulting with your doctor or health care provider before using the device.

Can I wear clothing during my treatment sessions?

Of course, just make sure that the area that you’re treating is completely exposed.

Have the health effects of heat & light therapy been scientifically studied?

For a list of literature and studies on photobiomodulation and low-level light therapy, see the photobiomodulation educational sources and studies above. We have also referenced studies for the use of FIR Heat TherapyNIR & Low-Level Light Therapy, via our learn page above.
